The Power of Focus: Why Doing Less Helps You Achieve More

Focusing on too many things at once prevents you from making real progress in any area. As a side effect, it also makes your mind feel foggy and scattered.

Multitasking from time to time is fine, but when it becomes your default way of handling daily tasks, it’s worth questioning that habit.

Do you really need to be doing three things at the same time?

I’ve been asking myself this question lately. In the past, I had a bad habit of trying to do multiple things at once—and thankfully, I’ve become aware of how inefficient that can be. Sure, cleaning while listening to a podcast can make time pass faster and the task feel more pleasant. The mind is engaged while the body is busy. That combination works. But it’s a different story when you try to juggle several mental or physical tasks simultaneously. You can’t be in two places at once, nor can you be fully present in two conversations.

Especially when in hurry, many deadlines on top each other, you may feel  also like needing more time. But the thing is, you don’t need more time, you need more focus. The better you focus, the less there is hassle, less mistakes. And the better you focus, the faster you become with that one task, that you have prioritized. And the more smoothly you can transfer yourself to the next one.

Distraction also takes from action, and that is the downside of doing multiply things at ones. The more you get distracted, the more delay the desired outcomes, the more you interrupt your own progress. In the bigger picture, You may even loose the sight of what would be the very next step (or steps) to take, which means that you will miss the  opportunities laid in front of you.

What you water will grow, so be mindful for your focus. We all have the same hours in a day, and personally I have noticed that the more tired I am, the more I tend to be on my phone and doom scrolling. This seems like its nothing, yet im not actually resting either nor doing something useful that your future self would thank me for. The less you focus on what others are doing the more you can focus on what needs to be done in your own life.

That takes us to the fact, that a little planning ahead brings ease and clarity, and you will be more effective with less of a stress as you will be were you should be. And this also makes it easier to find time to just be, and to do what your heart desires. The less you have stress, the clearer the mind. The clearer the mind, the better the focus.

Your future is created by what you do today, not tomorrow.
